AML Challenges
AML Challenges
Context
Safeguarding the integrity of the EU’s financial system and combating money laundering have become critical priorities, as illustrated by the recent creation of the EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority (EU AMLA). This development reflects the growing urgency to address structural weaknesses in the EU’s AML framework, highlighted by a series of high-profile money-laundering scandals.
The EU has long aimed to establish an integrated and effective AML regime capable of adapting to increasingly sophisticated laundering techniques. This objective has become even more pressing in light of the digitalization of financial services, the rise AI and of cryptocurrencies, the cross-border nature of financial crime, all of which require stronger regulatory oversight and enhanced international cooperation.
